COVID 19 Antibody Donations Needed!
Posted almost 5 years ago
Providers, it is vital you speak with your patients regarding COVID 19 antibody donation. Unsure how to approach the topic? Please see the discussion below provided by Dr. Sharon Wright, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, Vice President Hill Country Nurse Practitioners Association.
What happens once you have had COVID-19? What can you give back besides sharing your experience and symptom complex? It turns out that your plasma may have anti-bodies that can help others that are infected fight against COVID-19. Donated plasma that contains COVID-19 antibodies is called “convalescent plasma”. While this is regulated under the FDA as an investigational product, it can be given under the “Emergency Use Authorization (EUA)”. It is intended for use in hospitalized patients and requires informed consent.
If you have been recovered for more than 2 weeks, over the age of 17, and feeling generally well, we need your plasma! You can sign up through the American Red Cross, America’s Blood Centers, and Blood Centers of America.
For more information about the EUA, please visit the following FDA websites: https://www.fda.gov/emergency-preparedness-and-response/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19/donate-covid-19-plasma
